Classic Game Room buys a SEGA SATURN video game console

By Stars & Astronomy On September 9th, 2010

It’s an ADVENTURE!! Classic Game Room buys a SEGA SATURN video game console system!!! This action packed behind the scenes adventure film follows Classic Game Room to the front lines of video editing all the way into Squirrel Hill to buy a used Sega Saturn. The Saturn was not one of Sega’s most successful video game consoles, in fact you could say it failed horribly. However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some great games for it like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Virtua Fighter 2, Darius Gaiden, DoDonPachi, Doom, Shenmue, Guardian Heroes, Panzer Dragoon Zwei II, Sega Rally, Shining Force III, Snatcher and Sonic Jam. It is well known for 2D games like vertical and horizontal scrolling shooters, or SHMUPS like Gunbird. The SHMUP genre was never as popular in the United States and most people didn’t give a hoot about the Saturn because they were too busy playing Playstation back in the mid to late 1990′s. Well, whatever. Classic Game Room certainly doesn’t care if most other people thumbed their nose at it, we’re getting one, and here’s the movie depicting the journey to Saturn!!!!

Despite Positive Image, Saturn Brand Appears Doomed

By Stars & Astronomy On September 8th, 2010

In most cases when a respected brand is struggling, the parent company is able to make needed changes which helps to revive that brand, often to its former glory. Sometimes a trusted brand loses its original appeal, requiring the owner to make the necessary changes to brighten up the brand, restoring it to the lofty position it once held.

Saturn was one of those brands which received accolades in its early days. Founded in 1985 as a separate, but wholly owned car company belonging to General Motors, the brand\’s first line of cars – the S-Series – quickly became a fan favorite when they rolled off of a Tennessee auto line for the 1990 model year. Owners were crazy about their cars, gathering together for company sponsored meet ups which helped to propel the brand. Suddenly, GM had a good alternative to the small cars from Toyota and Honda which were gobbling up market share.

But, GM eventually abandoned the idea of Saturn operating separately from the automaker and eventually folded the company into its North American operation. Soon, the independent car company exchanged its unique appeal for a more blended corporate look, a transition that also allowed the brand to sell many more models and expand its base. For awhile, the new Saturn image bolstered the brand, giving the quirky car company a new lease on life.

When GM decided to shut down its aged Oldsmobile brand in 2003, some analysts were shocked that GM did not shut down Saturn instead. Reasoning that the longevity of the Oldsmobile moniker gave it a special strength, these same critics though GM was making a huge mistake. Instead, GM which was finding itself managing too many brands, decided to remove Oldsmobile given the unique dealer network that had made Saturn famous.

Saturn was the first car company to introduce “no haggle” pricing, a move which also removed high pitched pressure from sales people, the bane of the automotive industry. Customers loved this fresh approach.

Retiring GM executive, Bob Lutz, recently shared the bad news about Saturn: GM would most likely not be in a position to restore the brand. Given the automaker\’s dire financial condition, the funds and the energy to keep Saturn going simply doesn\’t exist. Instead, GM will most likely emerge from it currents predicament as a smaller, leaner company with few factories, workers, and certainly fewer brands.

In addition to dissolving Saturn, GM will likely dissolve Hummer and sell off or dissolve Saab. Cadillac, Buick, GMC and Chevrolet would emerge as the primary brands for the automaker while Pontiac would be kept as a niche brand featuring one or two models.

For Saturn owners, cars will be serviced by GM\’s other brands, but the originality of the nameplate will be gone, much in the same way that GM no longer has Oldsmobile in the fold.

The Saturn With a European Touch

By Stars & Astronomy On September 6th, 2010

The Saturn division of General Motors looked like it was overlooked in recent years by the Michigan-based car manufacturer. For the 2007 model year though, GM has increased its attention toward expanding the Saturn division. One concrete example is the Saturn Aura which is being marketed as an upscale midsize sedan. It replaced the highly unsuccessful Saturn L-Series.

For the 2007 model year, the Saturn Aura is designed to have more European car traits like its cousin – the Opel Vectra. While it shares its platform with the Chevy Malibu and the Pontiac G6, it is much closer to the Vectra than the two other American cars.

The Aura borrowed some of its design concepts from its sibling – the Saturn Sky. The headlight configuration which somehow looks oversized, the bulge in the hood, and the distinctly designed fenders bear resemblance to the Sky. These design concepts give the Aura a sporty look that is common on most European cars. The distinct nose is accented by the Saturn badge which complements the grille design.

Inside, the European inclination of the Aura is even more highlighted with its luxurious interior design and features. Saturn offers a “Premium Trim Package” which is consisted of leather seats, a steering wheel rim, and a shift knob. Saturn also offers an “Enhanced Convenience Package” which adds power-adjustable pedals. The combination of these further enhances the luxurious environment inside the Aura. In terms of driver-friendliness, the Aura sports well-lit and easily visible instrument panels. Entertainment is taken cared of an audio system which includes AM, FM and an optional XM Satellite Radio and a six-disc in-dash CD changer.

In terms of safety, the Saturn Aura is designed to have a built-in safety cage. This structure is integrated into the structure of the body of the Aura. Airbags for the front seats are dual-stage offering better protection to both driver and passenger. The Aura is also equipped with the GM Passenger-Sensing System which determines how to deploy the passenger airbags depending on the weight of the passenger which is a good safety feature for small children. It is also equipped with an electronic stability program and four-wheel anti-lock brakes. These safety features complements other components of the Aura like the Saturn water pump which ensures that the engine is kept at the right operating temperature.

In terms of engine, the Aura is available with three different engines. The first one is a 2.4-liter belt alternator starter hybrid powertrain which is fitted to the Aura Green Line or the hybrid version of the Aura. The drivetrain produces 164 horsepower and is mated to a four-speed transmission. The second engine choice is a 3.5-liter V6 engine. This engine is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission and can produce as much as 224 horsepower. The third engine choice is a 3.6-liter V6 engine capable of producing 252 horsepower and is coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission which allows a manual gear shifting.

New Saturn Dealer Hopes to Win Over More Customers

By Stars & Astronomy On September 1st, 2010

Many Saturn customers said that a Boardman location would be more convenient. After months of planning and renovation, Saturn of Boardman has opened. With another Saturn location on U.S. Route 422 in Niles, car dealer Jim Pace decided to expand last October and purchase the former Frederick Dodge location at 7554 Market St. This is how appealing the renaissance of Saturn product lines has become.

“We had a lot of people coming to the Niles location saying how they wish there was a dealership in Boardman and how it would be more convenient,” said Bill Burns, the general manager of the new store. Burns stressed that there was a need for another Saturn dealership in the area because Pace serves five counties with an expanding line of cars.

“We went from one small car to a whole lineup,” Burns said. “Now we go from a two-seater to an eight-passenger vehicle.” He added that when it opened in 1991 the Niles dealership sold only S-Series compact cars. While being one of the fuel efficient cars of its time, it was hard to sell just small cars to the public.

Now purchasers can pick sport-utility vehicles such as the Outlook and the Vue; mid-size and compact cars, the Aura and the Astra; and the Sky Roadster. Two of the cars, the Vue and Aura, are available as fuel-efficient hybrids but are currently sold out.

The Outlook crossover SUV is based on the GM Lambda platform, which it shares with the GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave. It is powered by the 6 L DOHC 24-valve HFV6 engine with Variable Valve Timing available in two versions: the XE and the XR. The Vue, also a crossover SUV, uses the GM Theta platform. It flaunts durable auto parts like the Saturn strut, engines and cold air intake for uncompromised performance.

Another product of Saturn’s renaissance is the Aura, the replacement of the L-Series. The Astra, meanwhile, will be produced for the 2008 model year to replace the Ion as Saturn’s smallest model. The Astra will be available in three-door and five-door hatchback body styles. The rebirth concept of the automaker also produced a new roadster – the Saturn Sky. The roadster features 18 in wheels and a 2.4 L Ecotec LE5 I4 engine that produces 177 hp and the new I-4 2.0L direct injected turbocharged engine that produces 260 hp.

The former dealership, Frederick Dodge, moved down the road after acquiring Greenwood Market Motor. Combining their vehicles together, the location at 7871 Market St., is known as the Frederick Chrysler Jeep Dodge.

The previous building of Dodge was gutted, leaving nothing but a shell. The multimillion-dollar renovation covered repaving and expanding the lot and adding more landscaping and lighting. What is more, the exterior of the building was given a new appearance. It is only one of three in the country with Saturn’s new building style dubbed as “Ex Set.”

On the inside, Burns said that the store is set up to appear more casual to customers. “Some places have most of their customers tucked away, not having them around sales consultants,” he said, “We put them where they can interact with them and not feel secluded.”

With two lounges and a children’s play room, Burns hopes customers will feel more comfortable. “It’s not like we’re putting them in a dark room and say we’ll call them when their car is ready.” Though there are many dealerships on Market Street, Burns hopes Saturn will stand out with how it treats its customers.

“We give equal treatment to everyone, it doesn’t matter if you’re a lawyer or a college student,” he noted.

General Motors Exports Rebadged Saturn Sky to Korea

By Stars & Astronomy On August 29th, 2010

One of General Motors’s assembly plants is handling the manufacture of a rebadged Saturn Sky which will be shipped and sold in the South Korean auto market. The South Korean version of the Saturn Sky is named as the G2X.

The assembly plant producing the said revised Sky is the Boxwood Road facility. The industrial unit has already shipped 60 units of the G2X roadster to California. From there, the vehicles will be dispatched to South Korea. The said move was made quietly by General Motors. The vehicles will be sold come October at the South Korean auto market.

The GM Daewoo brand has already promoted the two-seater convertible at various motor shows in South Korea. At the recently concluded Busan Motor Show, the brand revitalized by General Motors publicized the coming of the G2X in the South Korean auto market.

According to the company, the Boxwood Road assembly facility will be manufacturing 150 units of the rebadged Saturn Sky next year for the 2008 model year. All of these vehicles will be exported and sold in South Korea which is a market currently being dominated by vehicles from Hyundai and Kia.

The Boxwood Road plant was tasked with the assembly of the G2X since it also produces vehicles sharing the same platform with the roadster. Along with the G2X, the assembly facility also produces the original Saturn Sky with its Saturn intermediate pipe and other components. The Pontiac Solstice is also made at the same factory as the G2X and the Saturn Sky. Both the Solstice and the Sky are built for sale in the United States auto market. Aside from these models, the facility also produces Opel roadsters to be sold in the European car market.

The addition of the G2X to the facility’s tasks will not increase the number of shift or employees at the Newport plant. “It is very low volume,” says Pam Reese on the production of the G2X. In fact, Reese pointed out that the small number of G2X convertibles assembled at the facility was not listed at the factory’s production report.

The move by General Motors to market a rebadged Saturn Sky in other parts of the world is being commended by auto industry experts. The G2X is built around the Kappa platform which is designed for sports cars which means that the company only aims to produce a low number of the vehicles based on the platform. With the introduction of the G2X in South Korea, General Motors has expanded the practicality of the Kappa platform.

“For them to sell a version of it in Korea is a great way to maximize the functionality and profitability of an otherwise limited platform,” says Karl Bauer, the editor-in-chief at Edmunds.com. Analysts also predict that General Motors will be introducing a rebadged Saturn Sky convertible in Australia. It is expected that General Motors will market a convertible built around the Kappa platform under the Holden brand in Australia.

General Motors announced that they will produce about 18,000 units of the Pontiac Solstice at the Boxwood Road assembly plant, down from last year’s 19,710 units assembled. The Saturn Sky will benefit from this since General Motors aims to increase the production of the roadster. From last year’s 8,671 units built, General Motors aims to produce 13,000 units of the Saturn Sky. This year marks the Saturn Sky’s first whole year in the market.

New Vue Ushers New Era for Saturn

By Stars & Astronomy On August 25th, 2010

The Saturn brand has been receiving favorable attention of late. This is because General Motors has revitalized its lineup to make it more competitive. Partnering with German car manufacturer Opel, Saturn introduced a revamped lineup for the 2008 model year. The working relationship with Opel has given Saturn vehicles better looks and performance which can be expected from a German-designed vehicle.

The new lineup though has lost part that is no doubt intrinsic to Saturns of the past. Aside from outstanding customer relations, the division of Detroit carmaker General Motors is also known for its plastic body panels.

While the use of non-metal parts as panels of the Vue may have attracted the attention of many car buyers, it has also shunned many auto buyers. Like any radical technology, the plastic body panels were received with mix sentiments.

Some stirred clear of Saturn dealerships because of the fact that the brand’s vehicles are plastic paneled. But there are also those who love the advantages of plastic body panels like non-rusting. For the 2008 model year, the plastic body panels will be gone but the customer relation must stay.

New Saturn auto models will now be using metal body panels. The reason for this is that as part of General Motors’ restructuring plans, the assembly facility where Saturn’s plastic body panels were made will be closed down. Another reason is for safety. Although plastic body panels have distinct advantages, they are not as tough as metal parts which could adequately protect passengers in the unfortunate case of a crash.

The 2008 Saturn Vue then will not be equipped with plastic body panels but the European styling of the midsize crossover SUV is expected to endear it to auto buyers. The Vue is already Saturn’s best selling model and the redesigned of the crossover is expected to bring in more consumers to their dealerships.

Compared to the previous Vue, the new Vue is completely a new vehicle. If the previous Vue was not popular among auto buyers, it would not be surprising that General Motors will give the new Vue a new nameplate. But with a large buyer base already, the Vue nameplate is still used although the 2008 Vue is a completely new vehicle in terms of exterior and interior design, and performance.

On the outside, the Vue looks bulkier than its predecessor. With its corners given a more rounded edge, the new Vue looks bigger in comparison to its forerunner. The new exterior design of the Vue has already achieved widespread attention.

On the inside, the new Vue uses higher quality of materials compared to the 2007 Vue. Being designed in Europe, the interior styling of the new Vue comes as no surprise. It is also loaded with technologically advanced standard features as well as safety features.

Under the hood of the new Vue, the same reliable Saturn component can be found like Saturn header pipes, air filter, steering gear and the likes. For the 2008 model year, the standard engine of the Vue is a 2.4-liter Ecotec engine with variable valve timing for better fuel economy. This engine produces 169 hp. Two optional engines are also offered with the Vue. The first one is a 222 horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine and the second is a 257 hp 3.6-liter V6 engine.
