Universe, Energy & SETI Part 5

By Stars & Astronomy On September 9th, 2010

Universe, Energy & SETI Friday November 30th, 2007 Coast to Coast AM Theoretical physicist Dr. Michio Kaku joined Art Bell for a discussion on a variety of topics, including dark matter, alternative energy, and the SETI program. Kaku described the universe as “overwhelmingly dark,” noting that dark matter makes up about 73% of the total matter/energy content of the universe and is increasing. As this “runaway mode” continues, the stars will move farther apart until Earth’s night sky appears completely dark. Trillions of years from now, Kaku speculated, we will likely freeze to death here unless we can travel to a younger parallel universe. Kaku commented on the automobile industry, plug-in hybrid and fuel cell cars, as well as alternative energy sources. He believes a hydrogen economy will be viable when the rising price of oil meets with the falling price of solar/hydrogen power. Kaku also discussed global warming doomsday scenarios, the dangers of nuclear (fission) power plants, and the potential of ‘hot’ fusion reactors, which he imagines could be operational by 2030. Regarding SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence), Kaku expressed excitement over the new Allen Telescope Array, built in part by money donated by billionaire Paul Allen. The planned 350-dish array will increase search scans by a factor of 1000, he explained. Kaku also talked about the implications of receiving an alien transmission, as well as the potential dangers of alerting an advanced

UFO Hunters – Area 52 part 1/5

By Stars & Astronomy On September 8th, 2010

Part 2: www.youtube.com Area 51 is considered the ultimate top secret facility, one that UFO investigators believe houses an extraterrestrial secret. But is there an even more secretive facility? In Dugway, UT, there is a remote testing facility sometimes referred to as Area 52. UFO watchers in this part of Utah have witnessed strange phenomena at this military site for over 10 years, leading to speculation that much of Area 51s secretive work is now conducted at Area 52. The team examines video of bizarre beams of light seen shooting up from the area, meets with an astrophysicist who has charted mysterious cosmic rays operating out of Dugway, and analyzes photos that suggest something very strange is taking place.

NASA | Exploring the Inner Solar System (Part 4/6)

By Stars & Astronomy On September 5th, 2010

Part 4 of Dr. Garvin’s talk includes a hypothetical trip to a near-Earth object, a look at NASA’s explorations of our own place in the solar system, planet Earth, and an introduction to what makes Mars such a fascinating place to study. (Show Description) Chief Scientist of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Dr. Jim Garvin, takes us on a journey to Mercury, Venus, Earth, the moon, near-Earth objects, and Mars. Why does space matter? Why is exploring the inner solar system so crucial? Where will humans and robots venture to next? In this video lecture, filmed July 14, 2010 in NASA Goddard’s HD Science Studio with an audience of summer interns and co-op students, Dr. Garvin discusses NASA’s past, present, and future of discovery on our nearest neighbors in the solar system.
