If Abraham were so inclined, he could have counted about 5,000 stars.

As a shepherd living out-of-doors, the poet, David, no doubt frequently contemplated the awesome majesty of the lunar phases and other celestial phenomenon, in comparison to his own smallness and insignificance. Accordingly, the lyrics to one of his inspired songs ponders the question: “When I see your heavens, the works of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have prepared, what is mortal man that you keep him in mind, and the son of earthling man that you take care of him?”

Unfortunately, because of so-called “light pollution,” city dwellers now can see far fewer stars than David and Abraham did. However, the trade-off is that modern astronomical science has extended our view far, far beyond the limitations of unaided sight. Ancient sky-gazers, in fact, had no idea of how immense and wonderful the universe really is. The to unaided eye many of the twinkling lights that appear as stars are themselves swirling galaxies containing billions of stars. The orbiting Hubble telescope has extended our view of the heavens even farther. It seems that we are now peering out from our insignificant location to the very edge of the universe.

Scientists and astronomers have recently discovered a strange new heavenly wonder. By observing the pulses of light from a dying star known as a white dwarf, researchers have theorized that the core of the star has solidified into a giant diamond-like crystal the size of our moon. The New Scientist magazine says of this phenomenon: “But the crystal, which has been likened to a diamond, is in fact unlike any known on Earth. The pressure inside the white dwarf is a million, million times the pressure that produces diamonds.”

Although the ancient patriarch, Job, could not have known about such phenomena as a diamond as big as the moon, still, his appraisal of God’s work is apropos. “Stretching out the heavens by himself and treading upon the high waves of the sea; making the Ash constellation, the Kesil constellation, and the Kimah constellation and the interior rooms of the south; doing great things unsearchable, and wonderful things without number.” – Job 9:8-10

Centuries later the Hebrew prophet called Amos also referred to the Kesil and Kimah constellations and credited their creation to Jehovah. Amos 5:8 states: “The Maker of the Kimah constellation and the Kesil constellation, and the One turning deep shadow into the morning itself, and the One who has made day itself dark as night, the One calling for the waters of the sea, that he may pour them out upon the surface of the earth—Jehovah is his name...”

Prof. Oliver Schaeffer and Postdoctoral Fellow John Funkhouser were part of the team that announced the first dating of the age of the Moon to be about 4 billion years. This was based on the rock samples brought back by the Apollo 11 astronauts, the first humans to walk on the Moon, in July, 1969. These findings, the first scientific report based on analysis of lunar material actually retrieved from the Moon, were reported in the September 19, 1969, issue of Science under the authorship of “The Lunar Sample Preliminary Examination Team,” of which Prof. Schaeffer was a member. They were presented in a much more extensive form at a Lunar Science Conference of all mission investigators in Houston and published in an extraordinary 380-page “Moon Issue” of Science on January 30, 1970.

Stony Brook’s team, led by Oliver Schaeffer, determined the concentration and isotopic signature of argon gas contained in lunar samples. They combined these data with potassium concentrations for the same samples to derive an age of about 4 billion years for the Moon. This initial determination by the Stony Brook-led team has been corroborated by several other research teams using complementary techniques. Obtaining the age of the moon, our nearest neighbor, is a scientific milestone that has deepened our understanding of the early history of Earth and helped set boundaries for dating the origin of life on Earth.
How was the Moon formed and how did it come to have its present orbit around the Earth?

There are five dominant theories which have been proposed for the formation of the Moon.

1.The Fission Theory: The Moon was once part of the Earth and somehow separated from the Earth early in the history of the Solar System. The present Pacific Ocean basin is the most popular site for the part of the Earth from which the Moon came.

2.The Capture Theory: The Moon was formed somewhere else, and was later captured by the gravitational field of the Earth.

3.The Condensation Theory: The Moon and the Earth condensed together from the original nebula that formed the Solar System.

4.The Colliding Planetesimals Theory: The interaction of earth-orbiting and Sun-orbiting planetesimals (very large chunks of rocks like asteroids) early in the history of the Solar System led to their breakup. The Moon condensed from this debris.

5.The Ejected Ring Theory: A planetesimal the size of Mars struck the earth, ejecting large volumes of matter. A disk of orbiting material was formed, and this matter eventually condensed to form the Moon in orbit around the Earth.

A detailed comparison of the properties of Lunar and Earth rock samples has placed very strong constraints on the possible validity of these hypotheses. For example, if the Moon came from material that once made up the Earth, then Lunar and Terrestrial rocks should be more similar in composition than if the Moon was formed somewhere else and only later was captured by the Earth.

These analyses indicate that the abundances of elements in Lunar and Terrestrial material are sufficiently different to make it unlikely that the Moon formed directly from the Earth.

Generally, work over the last 10 years has essentially ruled out the first two explanations and made the third one rather unlikely.
Preferred theory of origin for the moon

At present the fifth hypothesis, that the Moon was formed from a ring of matter ejected by collision of a large object with the Earth, is the favored hypothesis; however, the question is still a matter for discussions in the scientific environment and there are many details remaining to the accounted for.

The moon works its way into our way of thinking, our feelings about romance, our poetry and literature and even how we feel about our day in day out lives in many cases. It is not only primitive societies that ascribe mood swings, changes in social conduct and changes in weather to the moon. Even today, a full moon can have a powerful effect on these forces which we acknowledge even if we cannot explain them scientifically.

The most obvious physical phenomenon that is directly affected by the gravity of the moon are the tides of the ocean. The tides are an integral part of how maritime life is regulated and the comings and goings of the fishing world in coastal communities. But not very many people know that at certain times of the year when the orbits of the earth bring the sun and moon into right alignment, there can even be tidal effect on inland bodies of water and even on the solid earth. Eons ago, when the moon’s orbit was closer to the Earth, it was the effect of the moon that caused massive changes in the topography of the land and on continental drift as well. This reflects the powerful effect the moon has had on both human history and on global geographical history as well.

You may sometimes wonder where the moon came from. Was it a planet that traveled too close to Earth and was captured in our orbit? Actually, the prevailing theory of modern science is that the moon was the result of a large scale collision with the still developing Earth early in its development which caused this large “chuck” to spin off into an orbiting body. This explains the similarity in composition as has been confirmed by many of the moon exploratory space missions that were conducted by NASA.

But this background also highlights another important influence the moon has had on Earth’s development that is seldom recognized and that is the stabilization of Earth’s orbital pattern. Most know that Earth is not round but more of an egg shaped orb. To be blunt, the Earth would wobble. Without the moon’s stabilizing influence, this shape would shift dramatically so the tilt of the axis, that is the polar caps would shift dramatically with each seasonal rotation producing climacteric, changes much more violent and drastic than we are used to. It is possible that life as we know it could not have developed here had the moon not been there to “keep the Earth in line” and continue to stabilize the orbital position of the Earth so our climate could remain stable and mild.

A third significant influence of the moon comes from that origin as coming from a collision which “ripped” the body of the moon from the developing core of the Earth. Because of this disruption in how the core of our planet developed, the metals that are usually intact in the core of the planet are actually scattered up and down the geography of the earth in diverse ways. Usually the metals of the planet are all concentrated deep in the core. But because of the collision which took the moon out to orbit, metals that have been crucial to the development of our industrial and technological cultures are readily available and easy for use to mine. This again, is something we can thank the presence of that lovely moon in the sky for.
